Art in Public Space: Crossroads of Visual Arts, Architecture, Urban Development and Citizens

Creative WorX and Goethe Institute Latvia cordially invite to the international conference "Art in Public Space- Crossroads of Visual Arts, Architecture, Urban Development and Civil Society".

Supported by NCP (Nordic Culture Point), Creative WorX launched in August 2011, a short term project "Art in Public Space", having in mind the idea of creating an international network, involving architects, artists, municipal stake holders, developers and entrepreneurs, politicians, planners and urban researchers, NGOs, students and engaged citizens aiming to share the knowledge of West European and Nordic countries of site-specific art in sustainable urban development with the Baltic countries.

The goals for including artistic projects in new buildings and public spaces are manifold. They span from support of artists, promotion of aesthetic values and education to contribution of shaping a new image and identity. Site-specific art projects can refer in a historical, social or political context to the location and the community. They can enhance and promote the cultural identity of a region or a nation and by this become an economic location factor.

An international interdisciplinary conference on 25 & 26 April 2012 Goethe Institute, Torņa iela 1, Riga / Latvia.

The intention of the Conference is to initiate a process of finding best practices in coordination of urban planning and design, visual arts in public space, urban engineering and citizens' esteem. In order to harmonize the interests of all the key players in this game, they have to communicate with another, to explain their specific problems and potentials, accepting those of the others in order get away from a fragmented planning and implementation process and to achieve an orchestrated approach, in which visual art plays an integrated, equitable part.

The conference is an open forum and all interested persons are welcome to attend it.
