Creative industries “which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property” (UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport) are decisive in advancing towards the knowledge-based economy. They comprise advertising, architecture, crafts, design, film, photography, broadcasting, software/ games, (electronic) publishing, music, visual and performing arts. The challenges for creative industry actors are high (low capital endowment, poor networking, low external visibility). Especially medium-sized cities need to enhance capacities to identify and develop the sector’s potentials. That goes hand in hand with a lack of transnational comparable data on the impact of creative industries for economic growth. At the same time a lobby for creative industry needs to be strengthened.
